What a trip to Jamaica really costs beyond the all-inclusive rate

Jamaica's all-inclusive resorts bundle a lot, but excursions, airport transfers and the departure process all add real costs most travelers underestimate. Here is a realistic picture.

Jamaica's all-inclusive resort model means your core trip cost is largely fixed once booked, but the extras outside the resort gates add up the same way they do everywhere else in the Caribbean.

What is usually included versus not

Most all-inclusive packages cover meals, resort-brand drinks, and basic water sports equipment, but tours off the property — Dunn's River Falls, Blue Hole, catamaran cruises, river rafting on the Martha Brae — are typically sold separately and cost $60–$130 per person. Airport transfers to the resort are sometimes included in package deals and sometimes not; confirm this specifically, since Jamaica's two main airports can be well over an hour from some resort areas.

Cash, cards and currency

The Jamaican dollar (JMD) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted and often preferred by vendors outside the resort, particularly for tips and small purchases. As with most Caribbean destinations, paying in Jamaican dollars for larger purchases generally works out better once you account for the exchange rate vendors apply to USD cash.

Tipping and fees

Tipping is customary for resort staff, tour guides and drivers even where a service charge is included in the package — a few dollars per service, in cash, is standard. Jamaica's departure tax is virtually always built into the price of your plane ticket already, so you should not need to pay a separate fee at the airport when leaving.
