Mexico can be a budget destination or a splurge one depending entirely on where you go: a trip based in Mexico City or Oaxaca runs much cheaper than one centered on a Cancún or Los Cabos resort strip, where prices track closer to US beach-town levels.

## A realistic daily budget

Outside resort zones, a comfortable mid-range daily budget — a good hotel room, three meals including one sit-down restaurant, local transport and a paid attraction — runs roughly $60–$110 per person. In major resort areas, the same standard of comfort often runs $150–$300 per day once you count resort fees, which are frequently not included in the room rate you were quoted when booking.

## Cash, cards and the dollar trap

Mexico runs on both pesos and, in tourist zones, US dollars — but accepting your dollars is a courtesy sellers price for their own benefit, usually at an exchange rate noticeably worse than the real one. Paying the same bill in pesos is reliably cheaper. Cards are widely accepted in cities and resorts but less so at small restaurants, markets and taxis, so carry some peso cash for those. Mexican ATMs (look for ones attached to a bank branch, not standalone ones in convenience stores or tourist strips) generally offer a fair rate; always decline the ATM's own "conversion" prompt and let your card network set the rate.

## Tipping and extra charges

Tipping (propina) of roughly 10–15% is expected at sit-down restaurants and is not usually included in the bill — check before adding it twice. Resort all-inclusive packages often still expect small cash tips for housekeeping and bar staff. Watch for a separate, mandatory resort fee charged at check-in that was not part of the advertised room rate; ask about it when you book, not when you arrive.
